Renovating your mud room

With the early winter weather hitting the Black Hills, it's time to start thinking about home improvement projects that can make life easier during the snow filled months. What better way to do that than to update your mud room.

Generally, your mud room is the first place you drop your shoes and coats after trekking through the snow and slush. Why not make this an organized space that is easy to clean and maintain for an easier life throughout winter?

Using linoleum or tile

First things first, the flooring. Using linoleum or tile for your floor ensures a quick wipe up and less stress. Having carpet in your main entry means using rugs and mats to keep the water and mud away. This can be a nightmare. Rip out that old floor and pick a fun and unique design for your entryway or mud room. Use bold colors if your house is generally neutral or use a simple stone look if you prefer a more natural look. Using square tiles ensures an easier install and a cleaner look.

Paint or accents

Just like with the floor, you can use the walls in your entryway or mudroom to make a statement. Going with a simple floor? Add a pop of color and some fun art to the walls. Going bold on the floor, choose a neutral tone and add a simple quote that defines your home on the wall.

Installing cubes or adding shelves

Adding storage can be a lifesaver, literally. Using cubes or large shelves gives you the opportunity to organize shoes and all the winter items you need when you walk out the door like gloves, hats, scarves, and umbrellas. If you go the cube route, you can purchase a complete system that doubles as a bench, making it easier to take on and off those pesky snow boots. After that's done, throw in a few hooks for your coats and you have an easy to clean and organize space.
